Playa del Carmen
Located in the middle of the Yucatán, the Chichén Itzá ruins are one of the most visited ancient sites in Mexico. Chichén Itzá was once a vibrant urban city at the heart of the Mayan Empire, eventually abandoned by the Mayans in the 1400s. This site features the pyramid El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulkan that still stands in excellent condition and represents the Mayan calendar. You can also explore one of the largest ball courts in the Americas, stretching 70 meters (231 feet) wide and 168 meters long (554 feet), it was once used for ritual games. Make sure to stay into the evening hours for the light show. Car rental is the easiest way to get to the ruins.
